Naturally-occuring anabolic steroids
are synthesised in the testis, ovary and adrenal gland from cholesterol
via pregnenolone. Synthetic anabolic steroids are based on the
principal male hormone testosterone, modified in one of three ways:
- alkylation of the 17-carbon
- esterification of the 17-OH group
- modification of the steroid nucleus
There is no serious risk from acute poisoning, but chronic use can
cause harm. The main risks are those of excessive androgens: menstrual
irregularities and virilization in women and impotence, premature
cardiovascular disease and prostatic hypertrophy in men. Both men and
women can suffer liver damage with oral anabolic steroids containing a
substituted 17-alpha-carbon. Psychiatric changes can occur during use
or after cessation of these agents.
Dosage
The typical dosage for men is one to four 25 mg per tablets per day. This is a sufficient amount to prevent gynecomastia, the drug is often used throughout the entire cycle. As mentioned earlier, it is often combined with
GP
Nolva (tamoxifen citrate) or
GP Cmomiphene (clomiphene citrate) when heavily estrogenic steroids are being taken (
Dianabol , testosterone etc.). Administering 50mg of
Proviron
and 20mg
Nolvadex daily has proven extremely effective in such instances, and it is quite uncommon for higher dosages to be required. And just as we discussed for women, the androgenic nature of this compound is greatly welcome during contest preparation. Here again
Proviron
should noticeably benefit the hardness and density of the muscle, while at the same time increasing the tendency to burn off a greater amount of body fat. Proviron is usually well tolerated and side effects (men) are rare with dosages under 100 mg per day. Above this, one may develop an excessively high
androgen level and encounter some problems. Typical
androgenic side effects include oily skin, acne, body/facial hair growth and exacerbation of a male pattern baldness condition, and may occur even with the use of a moderate dosage. With the strong effect DHT has on the reproductive system, androgenic actions may also include an extreme heightening of male libido. And as discussed earlier, Women should be careful around
Proviron. It is an androgen, and as such has the potential to produce virilization symptoms quite readily. This includes, of course, a deepening of the voice, menstrual irregularities, changes in skin texture and clitoral enlargement.
INDICATIONS
- replacement of male sex steroids in men who have androgen deficiency, for example as a result of loss of both testes
- the treatment of certain rare forms of aplastic anaemia which are or may be responsive to anabolic androgens.
- the drugs have been used in certain countries to counteract catabolic states, for example after major trauma.
SIDE EFFECTS
Along with their useful effects, all medicines can cause unwanted side
effects, which usually improve as your body adjusts to the new
medicine. Speak with your doctor if any of the following side effects
continue or become troublesome.
Headache, depression, feeling sick, changes in sexual desire, enlarged
breasts (in men), anxiety, feeling of weakness, swollen ankles,
increased hair growth, baldness, excessively oily skin, acne, pins and
needles, erections may be more frequent and last longer, early puberty.
If you experience black, tarry stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin
and whites of the eyes), difficulty urinating or blood in the urine
make an appointment to see your doctor as soon as possible. Tell your
doctor or pharmacist if you experience any other side effects which you
think may be due to this medicine.
