Prograf (tacrolimus) is a drug that suppresses the immune system and is used to prevent rejection of transplanted organs.
Prograf (tacrolimus)
accomplishes its immune-suppressing effecting by inhibiting an enzyme
(calcineurin) crucial for the multiplication of T-cells, cells that are
vital to the immune process. The use of oral
Prograf (tacrolimus)
allows transplantation specialists to reduce the dose of steroids which
are also used to prevent rejection. This "steroid-sparing effect" is
important because of the many side effects that can occur when larger
doses of steroids are used for a long period of time.
USAGE:
- Apply a thin layer of
Prograf (tacrolimus)
to the affected skin twice daily. The minimum amount should be rubbed
in gently and completely to control signs and symptoms of atopic
dermatitis. Stop using when signs and symptoms of atopic dermatitis
resolve.
- If signs and symptoms (itch, rash, and redness) do not improve
within 6 weeks, patients should be re-examined by their healthcare
provider to confirm the diagnosis of atopic dermatitis.
- Continuous long-term use of topical calcineurin inhibitors, including
Prograf should be avoided, and application should be limited to areas of involvement with atopic dermatitis. The safety of
Prograf under occlusion, which may promote systemic exposure, has not been evaluated.
Prograf should not be used with occlusive dressings.
Prograf (tacrolimus) is taken
twice daily. Doses vary widely and are based on blood tests that
measure the amount of tacrolimus in the body. Taking
tacrolimus
with food can reduce some of the abdominal pain that can occur with
this medicine; however, food can reduce the amount of tacrolimus that
is absorbed. This is especially true with fatty foods. Thus,
tacrolimus is best taken without food. If it must be taken with food, it should be taken with non-fatty food.
SIDE EFFECTS:
Similar to other dermatological products currently marketed, it is
advised that individuals practice safe sun techniques to avoid direct
exposure to natural or artificial sunlight. Skin burning and itching
have been associated with the application of
Prograf (tacrolimus) however, the incidence of these events decreased as the disease improved.
Do not consume grapefruit or grapefruit juice during treatment with tacrolimus unless your doctor has told you do.
Prograf (tacrolimus) can have a dangerous interaction with grapefruit or grapefruit juice.
Prograf (tacrolimus) can lower
the blood cells that help your body fight infections. This can make it
easier for you to bleed from an injury or get sick from being around
others who are ill. To be sure your blood cells do not get too low,
your blood will need to be tested on a regular basis. Your kidney or
liver function may also need to be tested. Do not miss any scheduled
appointments.
