Lamisil
(terbinafine) is a medication used to treat infections caused by
certain types of fungus. It is most commonly used for skin and nail
infections. Generic terbinafine tablets are available.
Inhibits
squalene epoxidase, resulting in ergosterol deficiency and a
corresponding accumulation of squalene within the fungal cell leading
to fungal cell death.
The course of treatment with
Lamisil tablets
is 12 weeks for toenail infections and 6 weeks for fingernail
infections. The drug works faster than the nail grows. Therefore, it
may be several months before new clear nails grow in.
Lamisil is available in a once-a-day dosing with no dietary restrictions and can be taken with or without food.
USAGE:
Absorption from oral
terbinafine is greater than 70%; bioavailability is about 40%.
Lamisil
(terbinafine) C max is 1 mcg/mL, T max occurs 2?h after a 250 mg dose.
AUC is 4.56 mcg*h/mL and is increased less than 20% with food. At
steady state in comparison to single dose, C max is 25% higher and AUC
is increased 2.5 times.
Lamisil (terbinafine) is more than 99% protein bound and there are no specific binding sites. It is distributed to the sebum and skin.
Prior to excretion,
Lamisil
(terbinafine) is extensively metabolized by at least 7 CYP isoenzymes.
There are no major metabolites that have antifungal activity similar to
terbinafine.
Lamisil (terbinafine) half-life is 200 to 400 h, and the drug is about 70% eliminated in the urine.
